Die Arbeit befasst sich mit Entwicklungen und Veränderungen in der Geschichte des Materials, analysiert aktuelle Innovationen, Bewegungen und Ansätze in der Gestaltung und hinterfragt den Rohstoffeinsatz und Umgang mit Materialien in unserer Gesellschaft. Das Begleitwerk «Materiallabor» ermöglicht durch experimentelle Studien eine Annäherung an das Thema Rohstoffgewinnung und Werkstoffentwicklung. Im Fokus stehen lokale und regionale Stoffe natürlichen Ursprungs, die in der Industrie und im Gewerbe als Rest- und Abfallmaterialien anfallen. Die daraus entwickelten Anwendungsbeispiele veranschaulichen, welch unerkanntes Potential in unseren lokalen und regionalen Rohstoffen steckt.
 
«What is Material» deals with developments and changes in the history of material, analyzes the latest innovations, movements and approaches in design and questions the use of raw materials as well as the handling of materials in our society. The foundational experimental «material laboratory» scrutinizes the modes of harvesting raw materials and the production of processed materials. The focus is set on local and regional substances of natural origin, which in industry and commerce occur as residuals and waste. The developed samples illustrate, what scope of
unrecognized potential lies in our local and regional resources.
