Reviving the Sealed Memory
The purpose of this thesis is to recall and visualize the autobiographical memory of my childhood, in which there were few documents about the people’s daily life in China (due to the government’s media control). Drawing is the main approach to experiment, stimulate, reconstruct and depict my individual memory. Moreover, my related memory belongs to the collective memory of Chinese, which can also be considered as the generational memory. Through the drawings and limited text, I took both insider and outsider views into my childhood. Thus it is hoped that the audiences/readers can evoke their own childhood memory and potentially leverage the methodology developed from this work to self-reflect. The final book, named Re-Image Memory, is a selected collection of drawings and some small text, which are randomly arranged in order, to re-present my childhood memory.
